Nallikari Snowfest has sparked global interest – applications from more than 10 countries and 3 continent
The international snow sculpture competition Nallikari Snowfest, held in Nallikari, Oulu, along with Oulu’s European Capital of Culture year, has sparked significant global interest. Snowfest received 19 applications from more than ten different countries. Eight selected teams will compete for the title of the best sculpture in February.
Nallikari Snowfest, now in its fourth year, brings together snow sculptors and locals from around the world by the sea. The selection process for the teams participating in the snow sculpting has been completed, with eight international sculptor teams chosen for the event. In total, 19 applications were received from three continents and over ten countries.
“The response and popularity of Snowfest among snow sculptors have been remarkable this year,” comments Nallikari Winter Village manager Kalle Komulainen. “We received excellent applications from Argentina, Canada, the United States, and various European countries. It was challenging to select only eight teams from the high-quality submissions for the February competition,” Komulainen adds.
Snow sculpting and Capital of Culture Year attracts internationally
The theme for the 2025 sculpting event has been chosen in line with Oulu’s Capital of Culture main theme, “Cool Contrasts.” Oulu’s year as the European Capital of Culture has garnered significant interest from snow sculptors around the world. Finnish snow and snow architecture attract creators globally, reflecting the growing appeal of snow art and Nordic culture.
With the team selections completed, Nallikari is preparing to welcome thousands of international and local visitors. As in previous years, the event will take place at Nallikari Winter Village, the hub of winter activities. Four days, from February 12-15, 2025, are allocated for snow sculpting, aiming to transform Nallikari into an impressive sculpture park created by both professional snow sculptors and the public. The event will culminate in the grand opening of the sculpture park, and the sculptures will remain on display until the snow melts.
“It’s wonderful to be able to host Nallikari Snow Fest again in February 2025,” comments Komulainen. “We eagerly await seeing how the preliminary sketches transform into snow sculptures during the competition and the stories they will tell,” Komulainen adds.
