Nallikarin Poiju Villat ovat auki ympäri vuoden myös talvella

Collaboration with Hiilipörssi has begun – Nallikari offers customers the opportunity to support peatland restoration

29.4.2026

Nallikari Holiday Village has introduced a new carbon sequestration model that enables guests to contribute to local climate action as part of their stay. A voluntary contribution fee is directed to the restoration of drained peatlands in Finland, in cooperation with Hiilipörssi Oy.

Customers can participate in climate action in connection with their stay

Nallikari Holiday Village offers its customers the opportunity to support domestic carbon sequestration in an amount equivalent to the carbon footprint of their stay. The voluntary contribution fee is directed straight to peatland restoration.

Hiilipörssi Oy has been selected as the new partner for the initiative due to its domestic climate actions.

“We wanted to find an highly effective domestic method of carbon sequestration to support our sustainability and environmental work”, says Antti Romppanen, Environmental Manager at Nallikari Lomakylä. “We felt that Hiilipörssi Oy’s story and approach to peatland restoration aligned with our own values, so the choice was easy when we discovered the service. We hope to carry out carbon sequestration together with our customers multiple times in the near future, as the ease and speed of the Hiilipörssi service are on an excellent level”, Romppanen continues.

Participation has been made easy for the guests: the contribution fee can be added straight to the accommodation booking at the reservation stage when booking is made directly through Nallikari Holiday Villages own booking channel. Alternatively, the fee can be paid on-site at reception upon check-in.

A peatland is an effective carbon sink

Finland is one of the most peatland-rich countries in the world, but a large share of its peatlands has been drained for forestry. Drainage alters the peatland’s hydrology and, as the peat decomposes, increases carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

In restoration, drainage ditches are blocked and the water level is returned closer to its natural state. As the peatland recovers and carbon dioxide leakage stops, it begins to sequester carbon again and function as a carbon sink. Restoration simultaneously improves biodiversity and reduces the runoff of nutrients and suspended solids into water bodies.

Hiilipörssi Oy implements restoration projects

Hiilipörssi Oy is a Finnish organization that focuses on restoring drained peatlands. The company carries out restoration projects in cooperation with landowners and enables both businesses and private individuals to take a concrete part in climate action in Finland.

“By restoring peatland nature, in addition to combating climate change, we also enable the return of many endangered species to the bogs. For example, the rapidly declining willow ptarmigan gains new habitats, and the important cloudberry returns to restored peatlands”, says Heikki Susiluoma, who has been involved in Hiilipörssi’s operations since the beginning.

“Since 2018, Hiilipörssi has already restored dozens of peatlands across Finland. For our customers—both companies and individuals—tangibility, proximity, and transparency of operations are important. Particularly valuable are operational models where companies’ customers—such as in Nallikari—can also participate in restoring Finnish nature”, Susiluoma continues.

Part of Nallikari Holiday Village’s sustainability work

Carbon sequestration cooperation is part of the long-term sustainability work of Nallikari Holiday Village. The northern tourism center continuously develops ways to reduce the environmental impact of its operations and promote sustainable tourism. The goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, supported by a carbon roadmap created in cooperation with Ramboll Oy.

Through this carbon sink initiative, guests can also choose to participate in climate action during their stay:
