A Few Surprising Reindeer Facts
Reindeer are real Arctic animals specially adapted to cold and snowy conditions. Their broad hooves help them move over snow, while their thick coat keeps them warm during northern winters.
Both male and female reindeer can grow antlers, making reindeer unique among deer species. They are herbivores and naturally eat plants such as lichens, grasses and leaves. During the farm visit, you can feed them suitable food provided by the guide.
In the best-known Christmas tradition, Santa Claus has eight original reindeer, with Rudolph commonly added as the ninth. At the farm, the real reindeer have their own names, personalities and stories.
How the experience unfolds
Your journey begins in Oulu, where comfortable transport takes you to a quiet farm surrounded by Christmas trees. On arrival you’re welcomed by a friendly local guide who introduces the reindeer and shares stories about their lives, habits and special connection to Finnish culture. You’ll also have the chance to change into thermal clothing before heading outside.
This is a small, family-run Christmas tree farm, home to three carefully cared-for reindeer. Instead of crowds and large herds, you’ll meet the reindeer personally, learn their names and stories, and take your time to feed, pet and photograph them. These calm, gentle animals make the encounter safe and enjoyable for children and adults alike.
After your time outdoors, you’ll step into a warm wooden hut (kota) where an open fire awaits. Here you can relax with a hot drink (glögi) and a freshly baked pastry – such as a Christmas tart during the festive season. The experience also includes a visit to the Christmas tree farm, where you’ll learn how the trees are grown and cared for through the seasons. You can decorate your own tree – and before Christmas Eve, guests can even choose and cut down a tree of their own.
